Geek Talks

Objectives

  • Create a regular informal forum where developers present and share their design ideas
  • Get feedback on design before anything is too deeply settled in code
  • Expose everyone in the team to other aspects of Chandler than the components they work on
  • Spread Python coding best practices

Regular Geek Talks

  • Regular time slot alloted : every Monday, 2pm PDT (Pacific Daylight Time)
  • Developers will bid for the next time slot and propose a discussion subject
  • The length of the discussion will vary depending of the subject between 1 and 2 hours
  • Philippe will receive the bids and coordinate the scheduling (reserve the room, conf call bridge, etc...)

Format

  • Short presentation by developer calling the talk
    • No formal presentation (no slides) unless really necessary, just demo and code (please use VNC so the remote people can follow the talk)
    • Focus on challenges presented by the problem at hand and the various solutions evaluated
  • List set of questions that needs to be answered by the group
  • Discussion and Q&A

Rules

  • Those discussions are not a private forum intended to bypass the dev list discussions, rather, they are a way to jump start the discussions and thoughts
  • No final decision will be taken during those discussions
  • Someone (default Philippe) will be the note taker and will :
    • Take notes during the meeting
    • Send notes to the dev list after the meeting
    • Post notes to the Wiki if appropriate
  • People (staff or not) who can't attend the talk will then have an opportunity to voice their opinion on the dev list
  • When appropriate, the discussion will form the initial kernel of an implementation spec or doc or proposal that will be published to the Wiki and open for dev list discussion

Topics for Geek Talks

  • Talks can be on any subject related to Chandler code architecture and design
  • Developers are encouraged to propose subjects that would help them make better design decisions
  • Python and wxWidgets (or any external code we rely upon) technical discussions are perfectly fair game
