Trademark

• Ted's meeting with folks from other foundations at OSCON: trademark issues
  • A wide range of different policies, with different organizations having different needs
  • Firefox is widely distributed, and people use it to access secure information (like personal banking). Mozilla is very concerned about defending the trademark, so people can rely on the thing they download being secure and from Mozilla. Their stance towards trademark is on one end of the spectrum.
  • Eclipse actively enourages people to hijack their brand, so their stance is at the other end of the spectrum.
  • Problems are most likely to occur outside the US: Asia, Europe. International trademark registration might be more important than US.
• A trademark policy saves us work in the long run.
• Having a policy is not a must have for Preview, but should probably prioritize it for soon after Preview.
• Jared sent a draft policy to the list. He was focused on what we want to allow (rather than what we don't want to allow). Ops team to reply. Revisit in a month.
• For the short term, agreed upon plan of action is to have an entry in the FAQ. Until we work out a more detailed policy, we'll be conservative and request that people contact us.
• Jared to own the FAQ entry. Jared is driver of Trademark Policy.
